Understanding the HVDC Transmission System

HVAC is referred to the High Voltage Direct Current transmission technology. It is a technology resources that helps in conversion of electricity from AC to DC. Today the HVDC technology has become very popular in the electricity industry because of several advantages which are as follows:

Advantages of HVDC
• It has environmental advantages
• It is economical as it is a cheapest way of electricity transmission
• It has asynchronous interconnections
• It also has the potential to control the flow of power
• It also has additional benefits such as better power quality and stability

Components of HVDC transmission system

The three main elements of HVDC system are the electrodes, the converter station at the transmission and receiving end and the transmission medium. The converter station at each other has the similar features. Its main components are thyristor valves, VSC valves, transformers, AC Filters and Capacitor Banks and DC filters.

Overhead lines are mainly used in bulk power transmission. This is generally bipolar in nature. HVDC cables are used in submarine transmission. The main reason behind this is that there is no limitation in the length of cables and it can also run till a depth of almost 1000 m. The maximum length of the cable goes till 60 km. Apart from this new power cable technologies are made from extruded polyethylene that can be used in VSC based HVDC system

There are mainly factors that determines the cost of HVDC transmission which are as follows
1. The amount of power to be transmitted
2. type of transmission medium
3. Environmental conditions and
4. Other regulatory requirements

It is recommended to consult an experienced manufacturer to get the estimated cost of HVDC set up. They help in calculating the budgetary price with the help of rated power price, transmission distance calculation, voltage level, type of transmission along with several other alterations.

HVDC transmission System in Electricity Industry

It is the best system which is environmental friendly and at the same time economical. With the help of new technology such as VSC based HVDC, better ways of power links are now used for providing contractual transmission service. With further technological development HVDC system will soon become the preferred alternative in different transmission projects.
